In a materialist culture we can easily be squeezed into believing that we are what we wear, that our possessions define us, that our happiness depends on spending, replacing, consuming. Living lightly means breaking free from the addiction to consumerism. It is about being a true radical – going back to the roots of what really matters. Try to resist the advertisers’ pressure, and buy what you need … but don’t be afraid to spend well for quality, durability, sustainability and justice. When shopping, remember that every ‘thing’ comes from somewhere, and was made by someone. What is its story? What materials have been used? What conditions was it made in? How far has it travelled? What wildlife or peoples have been affected? Minimize your impact, and maximize your purchase.
