| Cash for burning waste | | Communities should be paid to accept waste incinerators, MPs urged earlier this week. The plan is floated by the Parliamentary Sustainable Rsources Group of MPs & peers. FoE said "Incineration is not the solution. We should be recycling precious materials, not burning them." (Ann Wills says: Campaigner Michael Ryan BSc compiles the figures showing that infant deaths increase in areas affected by incinerator pollution - dioxins etc. Google: Michael Ryan + incineration)

There is currently a campaign locally here in North Derbyshire against an incinerator which if it goes ahead would be only about 4 miles from where we live on the northern outskirts of Chesterfield.
| Surely the deeper answer has to be to consume less that then becomes waste needing to be burned? A couple of weeks back I was delighted to find a hot dog van that had all compostable cutlery and crockery - if they can do it... I was also impressed at the Coulston Hall in Bristol (music venue) serving drinks in biodegradable plastic cups.
| I agree - we need to 'own less' A neighbour recently pointed out that when we buy fruit in trays (for example) we are buying the packaging and it becomes 'ours'. Which in turn means that we are fully responsible for what happens to it next, and even recycling it means consequences in terms of energy consumption, water usage etc. And someone else has to do it for us - all because we 'owned' something we didn't want. It's an extreme view point but an interesting one - it made me think...
| Beverly, I couldn't agree more with your neighbour. I really think its time supermarkets provided paper bags for fruit and vegetables - they can do it for mushrooms so why not other things, maybe there should be a national campaign for this, paper bags can then be included in your own compost bin or reused. Maybe we should all take some paper bags with us, I wonder what the reaction would be! I have recently started putting some items in my trolley not in bags, haven't had any adverse reaction.
