PLASTIC PACKAGING MADE FROM SUGAR COULD GO IN COMPOST
Food packaging made from sugar could soon be composted with organic waste, according to research at Imperial College London. Most plastics are made from (petroleum) oil & take 100s of years to decompose. 'Plastic' made from corn biodegrades in months, but sugar degrades even faster. Using these would cut the use of (petroleum) oil & require less energy. 150million tons of plastic are used each year in UK, 99% of which is from fossil fuels.

That would be so good! Most of the organic produce I buy is carefully wrapped in plastic. This would also be very good for those of us choosing to buy fairly traded sugar, most of which is currently in plastic bags and leaves me feeling that I can make a choice that is responsible in terms of fair trade, but irresponsible in terms of packaging.
